LIST OF ISSUES
A STRONG ECONOMY
During my first years in the House, I helped to balance the $8 billion budget deficit that crippled our state, and I did so without raising taxes one penny. I am proud of the balanced budget we established and have maintained. In all that I do, I strive to ensure that work was not in vain. I believe that we must budget responsibly, trim back unnecessary government programs, and reduce spending whereever possible to guarantee the life of our economy today and the security of our state tomorrow.
As a Catholic and a father, I believe life begins at conception and ends with natural death. I have always passionately supported pro-life legislation to protect the most innocent and vulnerable among us. This stance will never change.
SMART HEALTHCARE POLICY
The system rolled out under the Affordable Care Act has been a broken disaster from the very start. I want all Ohioans to receive quality healthcare, but President Obama's faulty government machine is not how to achieve that goal. I sponsored a resolution against Obamacare and will continue to oppose it until an acceptable system that benefits all our citizens is put in place.
PROMOTING AND SUSTAINING AGRICULTURE
Having spent almost all of my life in the District and even working for six years in agriculture, I know how important the farms and farmers of our region are for providing stability and vitality to our communities and Ohio at large. As a Madison County Commissioner, I incorporated changes in zoning to build a comprehensive plan for preserving our district's agriculture. I am still committed to that mission and will always work to keep and grow our farms and guarantee that our farmers are rewarded fairly for their crucial occupation.
Much of the requirements and regulations placed on our schools and teachers have overly-burdened our children, stifling innovation and creativity and bogging down educators in a mountain of standardized tests and crushing oversight. I believe that schools should be governed as close to students and families as possible, not by state and federal bureaucrats with no understanding of our district's unique nuances and needs. I have pushed strongly to reduce the testing requirements facing our schools and to keep control in the hands of our local school boards and officials.
In addition, I think it is time to crack down on charter schools that have abused state rules and dollars for their own benefit--at the cost of our children's education. I cosponsored and passed charter school reform because Ohio's students cannot afford to be taken advantage of any longer.
SAVING TAXPAYERS' MONEY
I am a strong proponent for cutting taxes on both families and businesses. I have lead the effort to cut state income taxes in the last two budgets, eliminted the Death Tax, and unwaveringly supported and achieved small business tax cuts. Our neighbors and businesses know how to spend their money better than the government does, and leaving more in their pockets strengthens their fiscal stability and Ohio's economy more than any government program could.
GETTING OHIOANS BACK TO WORK
The American Dream asks us to pull ourselves up by working hard every day to achieve a better life. That work requires jobs, and I have committed myself to bringing those jobs to Ohio and to our region. I voted to create JobsOhio, which helped create tens of thousesands of new jobs, making Ohio #1 in the Midwest for job creation.
